FINANCIAL OFFICERS: Provided by AFGE National Secretary Treasurer J. David Cox this 3 day workshop provides the participants with the skills needed to be a successful Local Treasurer. The AFGE Financial Workbook will be reviewed and budget requirements and delinquency status will be explained. This course includes a review of the AFGE Billing System, Employees Taxes, LM Reports, & 990s

NEW LEADERS:  Provided by AFGE National Education Dept. 3-day workshop's revised curriculum is designed to equip new leaders with the knowledge and  skills they need to effectively lead their local.  Participants will have the opportunity to develop and  strengthen their team building and problem solving skills,  become familiar with the fiduciary  responsibilities of local officers, and identify the plethora of resources available to assist them in their leadership role.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING: Provided by Kent Wong, Director of UCLA Labor Studies Deprt. This class Includes hands-on negotiation training, conducting a "power analysis" of the bargaining process, federal sector labor law, and "win-win" bargaining strategies  The course will be taught by a UCLA faculty member who is an experienced labor attorney  

TACKLING DIVERSITY: No matter where you work—diversity affects you!  Our ever changing workforce requires the skills and tools to help you prepare for the changes taking place in the Labor movement.  This track will help you construct a proactive diversity program and familiarize you with the AFL-CIO Diversity Resolution adopted by AFGE.

BASIC STEWARD: Provided by AFGE D-12 National Representative Jean Santry this class is for new stewards. The course teaches the importance of what a contract says and how to enforce it. Partnerships and resolving conflicts at the lowest level.  Review of Negotiated Grievance Procedures, Employees rights and responsibilities, dealing with deadlines, grievance strategy, How to build a winning case, Duties of fair representation along with 5 U.S.C. Chapter 71 in brief.

BULLY BUSTERS: Provided by longtime AFGE activist & employee advocate Carol Fehner. Putting an end to workplace bullying.   Over 30% of American workers have experienced or been a target of workplace bullying.  This course will give you the tools to identify and address workplace bullying, and what we can do to stop it.

LMRDA:   Provided by the Department of Labor this course will cover members’ bill of rights and officer responsibilities under the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act, which includes required LM reports, recordkeeping, internal controls, and union officer elections  

 

MSPB: Provided by AFGE backpay attorney Michael Pazder this class orients union representatives from stewards to Local Presidents to the MSPB process and preparation of an MSPB case.  

ADVANCED STEWARD: Instructed by AFGE D-12 Representative Melvin Smith this class is for experienced union stewards. It teaches proper grievance processing, arbitration, collective bargaining, & duties and responsibilities. Effect and application of 5 U.S.C. Chapter 71, union rights and the responsibilities of both parties under this Statute. Official Time, Employee’s Rights, Management’s Rights, Formal Discussion, Bypass, Weingarten Rights & ULPs. 

 

EEO: Proided by AFGE National Vice President of Women & Fair Practices Agusta Thomas. This class will cover the EEO process. The areas that will be covered are federal laws that prohibit discrimination, theories of discrimination, burdens of proof, the investigatory process, discovery, and preparing a case for hearing.   

 

ARBITRATION: Provided by AFGE backpay attorney Michael Pazder this class orients union representatives from stewards to Local Presidents to the role arbitration plays in the grievance, and the key skills they will need to prepare a case for arbitration.
